DNA and Epigenetics: The intestinal microbiota, a second protective shield

The set of bacteria of the digestive system can be key in the response of the organism to therapeutic vaccines that are in the process of development
If we could take the hundreds of trillions of bacteria that inhabit our intestines and put them in single file, they would circle the Earth two and a half times. This huge and complex set of microbes, unique to each person as is the fingerprint, forms the intestinal microbiota.

The investigations carried out in the last 15 years have been revealing the crucial functions for human life that these microorganisms perform, such as training our immune system during the first years of life. In fact, it has been seen that the intestinal microbiota functions as a kind of second protective shield of the organism.
